Shadow Mushrooms

I'm getting older and you can tell by the way I forget things I knew. I used to know the purpose of a 'shadow mushroom' in game. For the life of me I can't remember... Help!!!

Patty suggested that they hide you... just eat one and find out... Tried it … and sure enough it works. However since they are an artifact and not real common, I'm wondering if they are good for anything else. Smoke bombs do the same and can be crafted in mass.
