Hello everyone !
(Plz excuse the errors i may make when i write in english, & remember i'm french...)
I have waited quite a while before writing s'thing on this thread, as i wanted to hear what everyone had to say about it (Shadow, if you have thought i was sort of betraying you not saying a word, i'm sorry about this...).
I do understand certains things you say, Ghost, Falkor, & Exodus.
- Many things can't be done on this shard with pets & with pets only : ok.
- A good player has to know how to play with pets, but also with weapons, magery, intelligence, tactics, etc... : ok again.
- You don't want "uber pets" -as you call them, Falkor- and it wouldn't be fun to go to the hardest dungeons, quietly sit on a chair with a good scotch and send the pets do the whole work : ok once more.
But all this is not an exact answer to what Shadow Walker said.
Shadow didn't ask for "uber pets".
Nor did Forge.
Noone here asked for 50 or 100 lvls dragons, who'd have 10.000 pts, & who would cause 800 pts damage per hit.
The only point, if i have well read this thread, was about permanent stats losses.
You could maintain the system as it is, still limit to 30 the max level any pet can reach, keep the pets the same strength, and remove the permanent stats losses rule.
Don't you think a player, seeing his best pet dead every time he does THIS thing or attacks THIS boss would quickly change his approach ? And his method ? And use other tools ? Unless he's stupid, and players here aren't stupid at all... ;o)
Beside, why these losses for pets and pets only ?
Imagine a warrior using a scimitar causing an average damage of 50 pts.
Imagine he tries to kill a boss with this weapon, dies, and understands it's not the good method to reach his goal.
Will the scimitar do only 40 pts damage after that ? No of course, so no permanent stats losses in this case.
And if a player attacks with magery & dies, will his spellbook contain 60 spells after that instead of 64 ? Obviously not.
So ?...
A second thing i'd like to say here is about roleplay.
I am not a great tamer, and my skill is aroung 105 at the moment.
I've spent more time reaching the crafting skills, actually.
But well..., i've got a few pets, amongst them lokaïs, 2 nightmares, and a few dragons. The one i prefer is a 30 lvl dragon. I had her (she's a female...) at lvl 1 and she has now reached lvl 24. I don't like it when she dies, and i wouldn't like to see her suffer permanent stats losses.
Why ?
Because i know she's only a few pixels someone designed at Electronic Arts, someday, but in the game, she's my favorite pet, and i am linked to her more than i am to any weapon or armor. She hunts with me, discovers dungeons & monsters with me, helps me a lot... I feed her, heals her when she's injured or poisoned, and take care of her.
You are right : this is really childish !, but that's the reason why i, you, all players !, we play UO : this is roleplay, and you can't deny it and just tell Shadow Walker "your pet had permanent losses ? Well, get another one and train it like you did before with this one".
Ghost, Falkor, you've built this shard, you've put inside many nice things which were not in the original UO, you have made playing UO a greater pleasure & fun than it was... (and i am sincere. This is no flattery).
I am sure you can do better than this concerning the pets & the stats losses.
Keep the pet limits where you have placed them, ok, but remove the losses thing, or make the losses non permanent.
You'll make tamers happier, and won't get uber pets nor uber players...
