Looking for gems

I see that some things I want to craft need gems. I had killed a few Gargoyles east of Yew and got some but when I went back the next day I didn't see them. Was wondering if there is a good spot for Gargoyles... that isn't also over-run by uber mobs... I can manage a Gargoyle or two but I had to run away with all the spiders, scorpions, etc. that they hang out with. I'm not really setup up well for doing battle.

Dragons carry all sorts of gems. So when we go to Destard you'll take care of leather and gems lol.

or pick the dungeon chests in destard, but watch out for traps......
