Swarm of Insects

I was attacking Meer mages and one cast Swarm of Insects on me a few times resulting in my death. Normally if you hit yourself with fireball it will make them go away, however fireball did nothing to remove them, nor did fire field or explosion. They only dissapeared when I died so they seem to stay with you until then.
