WP Development Poll

I thought I would query our citizens and get their input of the future development for WP. Would you like to see WP continue developing with 5.0.6c, or would you like to see us start fresh with the latest version of of the client and the shard.

Starting fresh would mean that everyone starts from scratch, and that adding in all the content we have now would take quite a while. The benefit would be that we would have access to the latest UO client and to all the things that have been added between 5.0.6c and now. It would also be easier to stay current with new versions as they come out.

Staying with 5.0.6c means that we maintain all current accounts and all the wonderful content we currently have. We would continue to develop content that works with this version.

Thanks for taking the time to vote. You may respond below with your thoughts if you like.

*** Please note; I am not intending to cause panic with this question. I just want to get a feel from the community about the direction you guys and gals would like to see the shard progress in. We will not make a snap decision, and even if it is decided to go with the current version, it will take staff some time to develop a content filled, playable environment (many months or even a year). The 506c version would remain active during that time. ***

i have no problem starting completely over. I will be honest i voted to keep it the same. The reason i voted that way is because i like tradition. I see a lot of old things (before my time here) and its a nice look at little pieces of history. I would worry about relating to a shard... that basically has nothing behind it. We would all know it does but it would all be gone.

On the other hand if updating would truly be an improvement and lead to an advancement in play... i would be completely fine with starting my char all over... would be fun and frustrating all at the same time (again).

I personally feel i would miss the current shard and rather have staff continue and build on the work they have rather than see see it wiped. My 2 cents

*I would say if we did switch. Id rather do it right away and rebuild as the shard rebuilds than know we are switching and conitue on a course that will be eliminated anyway. Its going to take us all time to re achieve the abilities to do all the great things the shard has to offer anyway.*

I think new content is good. Gives new adventures and places to explore that you can one day call ...well the good old days lol.
The pros could outweigh the cons given new content to play with, stability/fixes from using newer softwares.
Also possibly generate some new player excitement alil on the side? It's always good to know a shard is growing and moving *shrugs*

To walk away from everything that is WP now, I would have to be completely convinced that the new version held more usable content and not just eye candy. I worry that the novelty of more landmass or a new playable race would wear off quickly. There would be other effects too, like not being able to use UOAM any longer, and I'll bet EasyUO doesn't like the new client either.

This site lists all the changes to the UO client. I assume we're around Publish 50.

http://www.uoguide.com/Publishes

The High Seas expansion (assuming it is supported by RunUO) added ship to ship combat, smooth sailing animations, and new fishing possibilities.

Replacing things is easy, even after almost 3 full months worth of game-play (going by hours played). I'd just hate to see all the history erased, all the unique event items, and reminders of players past.

I may try playing the "official" RunUO shard that's using the current client just to see how the gameplay works. Who knows -- it might be nice!

I was actually thinking about posting the publish timeline as I was looking it over the other day.

WP is at publish 33 June 21 2005. so thats 42 patches and 7 years of client development missing let alone the gap from having a more currently updated RunUO server framework and OS.

It's too early to argue the details of so many things but it shouldn't be overlooked for something personal as losing items or feeling like you sold out for a newer uo.....

afterall its not like ml or tokuno ;D

I guess i don't understand the point. Everyone here is here BECAUSE WP is what it is. I hear it with every new person... they haven't played in 7 years. Tokuno and ml are new to them to begin with. If someone wanted the newest stuff.... there are shards for that. We have so much room and un used space as it is.... what are you gaining? Fighting boats? More space that will take 10 years to develop? I see people posting that haven't explored all of WP as it is... you want to add more stuff you wont do?

I am not veteran like Yordor... But i share the sentiment... I love seeing items... gear.. trophies and prizes that i will never get to have. The uniqueness that makes WP what it is. The storied history and that's a big part of what made me chose this shard. I don't want a chance to be the "new" spacerx... I want everyone new and old to see his contributions and his dedication to the shard over the many years. I want to see the history of the story of NPG. You can see it in the shard if you are looking. The story of the owner... admins.. Newer staff like falkor.

we have a stable shard... filled with content that players asking for more haven't even scratched...I started uo in 97... i appreciate the old school charm this shard has... the resistance to over customizing and making uo a cartoon of its former self. That's why I'm here... to Play WP for the integrity that The staff and legendary players have kept here. It has nothing to do with personal loss. The players at the top will quickly be there again and the people that lack the motivation to improve... will live as they are.

I've been playing in Whispering Pines for almost a year now.
I've raised skills to the point where I only have a few more to raise. I've collected oodles of items in the time I have been playing and my experiences in WP have encouraged my wife, son and father in law to start characters up. I haven't done everything that there is to be done and I think it will be quite awhile until I do.
I think the original UO suffered from over tinkering to a large extent.
Everytime players of one class complained about the power of another class, the game was chanaged.
I have voted to stay as we are, not because of the skill and items that I have accumulated (these are easily replaced (except for the irrreplaceable!)). Its just that I tend to think that if its not broke, don't fix it!
I will of course abide by anything our leaders advise though and if they wish to take the project on, I'll do my best to contribute anything I can.
