Trial By Fire

This Guardian Spell was recommended to me recently, so I tried it out. At first glance, it seemed like an automatic winner. A powered up Reflect Damage with a long duration for minimal mana cost - sign me up! And at first it really seemed that simple. However, after dying a whole lot today at champ spawns that I've had no problem tackling before, I realize that when a monster hits you and activates the Trial By Fire they become your current target/aggressor. So what was happening to me was that a monster would hit me, take damage from Trial By Fire, become my new target, and then take a step away in semi-retreat because of the damage, causing my player to not swing on anything at all. Which ended in a lot of dirt naps. It's even worse when there are archers, as you can be physically surrounded by monsters but stuck re-targeting the archers 10 tiles away.
It''s not a big deal when there are between say 1 - 5 monsters around since I can easily see where my target is and move to compensate. But then I can handle pretty much 1 - 5 of anything even without Trial By Fire anyway. So does anyone know of a workaround for this dilemma? A setting I can change or different tactic I can use to fix the problem? Or is Trial By Fire just good for some extra damage against small numbers of monsters?
