Taming Advice

Hi

I'm new to the shard although not to UO however is been a fair while since I last played. I've never had a tamer in the years I played before so I thought I'd give it a go on WP..

I'm just looking for advice from some of you regulars on the shard on a few things that would be handy. I've been looking at Statics and doing a wee bit of research on the general beasties to tame...I.e Dragons, nightmares that sort of things, are there any tamables that are custom to WP?
Thanks to a very kind player I was given a PS for 105 Taming which im in the process of levelling up to. Where should I go or be thinking of heading to train further and increase my stable of pets.

I've played on a few different shards over the years and just wanted to say in the short time ive been on, this one has a really good feel to it. The player base have been very ,very helpful. Kudos on the shard folks. Looking forward to more interaction with everyone in the weeks to come.

If anyone is selling Taming P/S btw I'm always looking to buy :)

See you all in game

Hi Shazdelene and welcome :) I saw you online earlier today but I was on the way out the door to work, didn't have time to chat. Just like you, for most of my UO career I never played a tamer but I really enjoy it here. I'm almost done writing a pet training guide for WP - still just have one last thing to wrap up. I'd be happy to answer your questions.

There are a lot of different guides for training Taming over 100 but I kept it simple. Off the top of my head I can think of three relatively fast-spawning, non-aggressive creatures in Trammel alone that will take you all the way to 120. Bulls, Wandering Healers, and Bighorn Sheep. I'd kill the bulls and the sheep for resources and make the Healers fight something that'll kill them (which is most things). The only reason to tame any aggressive monsters while training is if you're also trying to fill Taming BODs at the same time.

There are a lot of great custom tameables here... Pink Fluffy Unicorns, Steel Steeds, elemental pets, craftable pets, and more. I'll say this about choosing a pet or combination of pets to fight with - the biggest factors in success are 1) high hit points, 2) maxed resists, and 3) being a really good, fast healer. Some pets are better than others depending on the situation but most times nearly anything will do if you can just keep it alive.

Be warned - a lot of the more high-end content and several named and/or unconventional monsters are at best not pet-friendly and at worst pet slaughter. I highly recommend not trying to start off with a top-of-the-line maxed out level 30 pet because permanent pet stat loss occassionally comes with pet resurrection. Get your feet wet with some mid-range easily replaceable pets. :)

Feel free to hit me up in-game if you have any other questions. See you around!

Thanks Ingwe, will do.....my playing time is a bit erratic due to work and the time zone but i'll holler :D

I've started with a drake just getting my feet wet and finding my way around.

Another bit of advice is be aware of the gimmickry of pet power scrolls. While they will allow you to raise a pets skills in various areas that gain comes at the expense of something else with a pet. So you must consider not just what you gain but what you lose when you shift around pet skills.

Personally i would find it hard to justify using a pet scroll at all unless it was for a specific purpose.
